Why the Atrium?
Following several sessions on open access publishing (at the University of Guelph and a national academic conference), Dr. van Rhijn was convinced of the advantages of open access. Furthermore, as an early career researcher, Dr. van Rhijn feels that building her collection on the Atrium will provide her with a stable and accessible place to deposit her scholarly works.
Dr. van Rhijn believes that having a secure collection with Creative Commons licensing built in will provide her with a foundation for disseminating her work through regular internet searching as well as through social media and other platforms for knowledge mobilization (e.g., Twitter, Academia.edu, LinkedIn). In addition, the Atrium provides Dr. van Rhijn with a place to share scholarly works that may not have the opportunity to be published in academic journals.
Dr. van Rhijn is an interdisciplinary social scientist and Registered Early Childhood Educator with two main areas of research interest. The first area is adult education, in particular the experiences of non-traditional students (i.e., student parents & mature students) pursuing formal post-secondary study. The second area is early childhood education with a focus on the impact of curricular and teaching practice in early childhood settings on child development and well-being. She is also strongly interested in student development and mentoring, teaching pedagogy and practice, community engaged scholarship, and the use of e-portfolios and other technology for course-related and professional purposes.
